PAINTING NOW assembles a selection of important voices in contemporary Australian and international painting. Showing across two Sydney locations, this exhibition focuses on progressive application of the painting medium.
Bundit Puangthong is a contemporary Thai artist based in Melbourne who is noted for his unique aesthetic that blends traditional Thai iconography with Pop and Street Art references. Puangthong explores the tension and permutations of his bicultural experience. West and East, new and old, rural and urban – polarities of being that are deconstructed, abstracted, and reconstructed as modern reflections on cross-cultural life.
Marc Etherington‘s multidisciplinary practice takes pop culture, childhood memories and everyday domestic life as its subject matter. Loaded with dry humour and sharp observations, his works are at once odd and approachable, funny and sad, delightful and intriguing.
Arash Chehelnabi‘s paintings explore the relationship between image and language in painting. Chehelnabi’s work is aiming to provoke the viewer to use their own imagination to find meaning by juxtaposing enigmatic and familiar forms. “It’s surrealism, basically. But where surrealism was looking to try to activate someone’s psyche, my focus is more about using that process to point to something beyond what you see: to highlight that process in the mind that stitches together images, words, or ideas, in order to come to an understanding of what you think it might mean.”
