The Sydney Times is seeking an ambitious and experienced Political Correspondent to join our dedicated team, focused on delivering impactful, unfiltered news across Sydney Civic and State political affairs. Our mission is to present governmental developments and initiatives directly, without the interpretations often found in mainstream media. We believe in empowering our readers with direct information to understand the news that impacts them.

 

The Role:

As our Political Correspondent, you will be at the forefront of state and civic news. You will be an organized self-starter with a strong news sense, a knack for recognizing quality content, and a passion for driving online engagement.

  • Oversee and drive daily content for online site
  • Manage news, event and content planning
  • Identify biggest stories of the day and drive through to publication
  • Work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced newsroom environment

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead Daily Content: Oversee and drive daily political content for our online platform, ensuring timely and relevant updates.
  • Content Planning & Curation: Manage news, event, and content planning. Identify the biggest stories of the day and drive them through to publication, curating content on our home pages.
  • Investigative Reporting: Research and investigate political stories, attending press conferences, political rallies, and other key events.
  • Interviewing & Analysis: Conduct interviews with politicians, government officials, and other sources. Analyze and interpret political data and polling results.
  • Produce High-Quality Copy: Write and edit engaging, accurate, and clean news stories, articles, and opinion pieces for digital and print.
  • Digital Engagement & Growth: Drive subscription growth for the digital masthead and increase traffic to the website. Use data analytics to find new trends and deliver stories that inspire, inform, and engage the community.
  • Community Connection: Build genuine connections across local businesses, sports teams, political leaders, families, and citizens.
  • Multimedia Storytelling: Harness a range of storytelling tools, including interactives, video, and graphics.
  • Collaboration: Collaborate with other journalists and editors to develop and pursue story ideas.
  • Adhere to Deadlines: Work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced newsroom environment.

Who We’re Looking For:

  • Experienced Storyteller: An ambitious storyteller with exceptional news judgment and multiple years of reporting experience, ideally with a focus on state or civic politics.
  • Digital & Print Acumen: Solid digital and print experience with a proven ability to drive audience growth.
  • Self-Driven: An organized self-starter comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment.
  • Strong Communicator: Excellent communication skills and a deep knowledge of an extensive range of topics relevant to NSW politics.
  • Detail-Oriented: A stickler for detail with excellent spelling and grammar.
  • Tech-Savvy: Experience with CMS, SEO, and social media is essential. Experience compiling and organizing reportage with the assistance of AI programs, vetting both original and AI-modified content, is desired.
  • Community Advocate: Passionate about advocating for and being the voice of the local community.
  • Networked: Ideally, you already possess a strong network within the local community and political landscape.
  • Natural Curiosity: Fantastic interviewing skills and a natural curiosity that drives you to discover the stories that will make an impact.

Volunteer Opportunities: Trainee State Political Correspondents

We are also seeking civic-minded volunteers – Journalism or Media students, or seniors/retirees – with a passion for political reporting. The sheer volume of media releases from the NSW State Government and Opposition is immense, and we require dedicated individuals to curate and publish these.

As a volunteer, you will gain vital journalistic experience by attending media conferences, taking photos, editing and posting media releases, and assisting as a webmaster. You will utilize an AI toolbox for quick editorial fixes, ensuring accurate and objective reporting. This is a chance to provide a crucial service to the people of Sydney and NSW by offering unfiltered, opinion-free news.

Graduate Volunteers or civic minded seniors/retirees for the Sydney Times

The sheer pace and volume of Media releases from the NSW State Government and the Opposition is huge and overwhelming,.. which is why we are calling for Volunteers ,..either Journalism or Media Students or Seniors/Retirees  with a passion for political reporting and a civic minded mentality,..to provide a reporting service to the people of Sydney and NSW by curating,formatting and publishing the numerous Media releases received.

Applicants will attend the important media conferences and take photos in situ and also edit and post the latest media releases and act as a Webmaster editing and formatting content.

You will need good reporting and editing skills and but you will be able to use AI toolbox  to generate quick editorial fixes  and ensure no nonsense and accurate reporting.

The Sydney Times posts Media NSW State Government and Sydney City Releases in Unfiltered format and currently we have a policy of not interpreting these the news and expressing opinions as do the other mainstream media .

It is important that the citizens of NSW have access to unfiltered Opinion Free news on a HyperLocal site and this is the Service that is part of our charter and mission.

At present We are not taking on Media interns because of the complesity of the law and the massive requiremnt to train and supervise thm in Media world where costs are massive and income is minmal.thin dividing line and the problems associated ..it is a thin line between training an intern and exploitation.

Available Positions:

– Sydney Civic Reporter: We’re looking for a skilled reporter to cover local government, urban planning, and community issues in Sydney. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of civic issues and a proven track record of delivering engaging and informative stories.
– *State Political Reporter:* We’re seeking an experienced journalist to cover state politics, policy, and governance. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the NSW political landscape and a strong network of contacts.
