This August, immerse yourself in powerful stories of resilience and transformation. Secrets of Dawn and Time to Live offer deep contemplation on survival, while Beyond the Walls showcases the power of community care, especially in providing opportunities for incarcerated youth. From storytelling to innovation, Atelier Bow-Wow will take centre stage with a public lecture on their groundbreaking approach to architecture and urbanism. To round out the month, the Festival of Dangerous Ideas returns with radical ideas and thought-provoking conversations, wrapping up a journey of reflection, achievements in the face of adversity, and innovative thought.

WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH

ATELIER BOW-BOW
Tuesday 6 August

Don’t miss Atelier Bow-Wow, represented by Yoshiharu Tsukamoto, Momoyo Kaijima, and Yoichi Tamai, as they share their insights on domestic and cultural architecture, micro-urbanism, and their extensive teaching experience in Japan and Europe.

Known for their innovative approach to architecture and urbanism, Atelier Bow-Wow’s projects emphasise sustainability, social impact, and the human experience in built environments.


7 – 12 August

Revealing the assimilation tactics under the NSW Aborigines Protection Act through the lens of Dawn magazine, this poignant exhibition features historical photos and contemporary art and highlights the impact of forced removal on Aboriginal girls at the Cootamundra Domestic Training Home.

Curated by Dennis Golding, Secrets of Dawn tells a story of healing and resilience through the voices of Coota Girls Survivors.


BEYOND THE WALLS
Wednesday 14 August

Join us for Beyond The Walls, a powerful community event showcasing the transformative work of Phunktional’s innovative program, which provides incarcerated youth with opportunities to positively contribute to their community and reduce recidivism.

This inspiring evening celebrates the achievements of young people connected with the Youth Justice System, led by professional First Nations dancers, performers, and producers.


TIME TO LIVE
Saturday 17 August

Experience the moving Time to Live, where visitors share a brief yet impactful moment with Emily, a 31-year-old with NUT Carcinoma. This artwork, marking ACRF’s 40th anniversary, highlights the urgent need for cancer research while highlighting a deep emotional connection to the challenges of terminal illness.

Take part in a weekend of revolutionary thinking as the Festival of Dangerous Ideas take over Carriageworks. Presented by The Ethics Centre, FODI features international experts and bestselling authors like Roxane Gay and Masha Gessen.

Experience the Australian premiere of Arlington, a dark fable of surveillance, isolation and hope by Enda Walsh.
Follow Isla as she endures life in a state-controlled tower block, trading her dreams for survival. Her only connection is an anonymous young man who records her stories from the other side of the wall, revealing glimpses of the world beyond and sparking an unexpected love story.

HIROSHI SUGIMOTO: TIME MACHINE
THE MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART
2 – 24 August

Featuring over 100 artworks, Time Machine is the artist’s largest to date, chronicling over five decades of his practice.
The key photographic series capture various subjects including seascapes, theatres, architecture and waxworks, blurring reality and perception.

These cultural events are part of a collaborative effort to spotlight remarkable experiences across venues in Sydney.
