Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory commencing at MCA Sydney

The Museum of Contemporary Art Australia unveils its major summer exhibition Julie Mehretu: A Transcore of the Radical Imaginatory on December 01 2024
Presented as part of the Sydney International Art Series 2024–2025 this Sydney-exclusive exhibition is the first exhibition of the work of acclaimed painter Julie Mehretu in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.
MCA Australia will present more than 80 works, including 13 new works created especially for the exhibition. The survey will include paintings made by the artist since 2017 and works on paper dating from the 1990s to the present.
Julie Mehretu is widely regarded as one of the most significant painters of her generation. Named by Time magazine as one of the ‘100 most influential people in 2020’ her paintings have been lauded for their capacity to convey the interconnectedness, energy and urgencies of our globalised world. In 2024 she was commissioned to create an 83-foot-tall work for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. The New York Times has described her as ‘one of today’s most original and thought-provoking painters.’
About the artist
New York-based artist Julie Mehretu (b. 1970, Addis Ababa) has exhibited extensively at major institutions across the US, UK and Europe since the 1990s, including mid-career survey exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2021) and Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2019). Mehretu has undertaken major commissions for Goldman Sachs, New York and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and most recently, for the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Mehretu has participated in numerous international and biennial exhibitions that have won her international recognition.
