Beethoven, Strauss, Australian Premiere & Young Virtuoso!  31 August at 3pm

The Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra returns to the Concourse Concert Hall in Chatswood on Sunday afternoon 31 August with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto and Richard Strauss’ Thus Spake Zarathustra – two masterpieces of the classical repertoire.

Come and hear this thrilling concert from the KPO, under the baton of artistic director Paul Terracini and joined by Teresa Yang, winner of the 40th KPO NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition 2024.

Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra is a profound work showcasing every section of the orchestra in a magnificently powerful and emotional journey. It is paired with Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, featuring soloist Teresa Yang. The concert will also feature a piece by the young Australian composer, Paul Nicolaou, Of Gates No Longer Known.

The tone poem Also Sprach Zarathustra is one of Richard Strauss’ most popular large-scale orchestral works. Based upon Friedrich Nietzsche’s novel of the same name, Strauss has created a musical masterpiece which will take you along an atmospheric sonic journey of passion, turmoil and joy as he seeks to resolve the eternal conflict between man and nature. The famous ‘Sunrise’ opening, notable one of music’s most recognisable themes, was used in the film music to 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Beethoven’s Violin Concerto challenged conventional notions of what a concerto should be, creating an expansive work full of musical expression, nobility and dignity. It has become a pinnacle of a soloist’s repertoire, inspiring audiences to enjoy the grace and lyricism of the solo violin in music which is full of depth and innovation. Dynamic young virtuoso, Teresa Yang – the winner of the 40th KPO Secondary Schools’ Concerto Competition 2024 – will join the orchestra to perform this thrilling concerto. She will be playing the valuable and historic AE Smith violin loaned to her by Emily Sun as part of her 2024 win.

The third piece in this programme is by young composer Paul Nicolaou. Of Gates No Longer Known is a work created for the 2023 KPO Composer’s workshop – a meditation upon conflict, drawing on his own family’s experience in Cyprus in 1974. The orchestra enjoyed rehearsing and recording this work and is proud to present its premiere performance.
