Blue Mountains Artists and Region Represented at Parliament of NSW in New Art Exhibition

A collection of contemporary artworks honouring the dynamic landscape, resilience, and history of the Blue Mountains is on display at NSW Parliament House during April, in the exhibition Altitude. Hosted in the Parliament’s Fountain Court, the free exhibition features the work of 18 artist members of the artist-run initiative Modern Art Projects Blue Mountains (MAPBM).

The Blue Mountains region is beloved for its rugged beauty and unique charm. Rising above the plains to a height of 1,215 metres, the area comprises a series of villages surrounded by protected wilderness and has spawned abundant artistic interpretation.

Curated by Miriam Williamson, the artworks in Altitude span a range of media including painting, printmaking, digital printing, photography and textile art. The group of MAPBM artists – ranging from Greater Western Sydney to Central Western NSW, all with a strong connection to the Blue Mountains – offer responses to the natural and urban environment, fauna, astronomy and social history.

“We’re thrilled to be bringing this wonderful collection of artistic tributes to the Blue Mountains into NSW Parliament for all to enjoy,” said Ms Williamson. “The exhibition is all the more poignant considering the impact of unprecedented climatic and global events on the region in recent years – and its amazing recovery.”

Altitude is being hosted at NSW Parliament House by Trish Doyle MP, Member for Blue Mountains and Parliamentary Secretary for Environment, Heritage, Climate Change and Energy.

“Those of us fortunate enough to live in the Blue Mountains know just how special this area and its dynamic community are,” said Ms Doyle. “I hope that this exhibition inspires not only a renewed appreciation of the Blue Mountains, but gives visitors pause to consider the importance of protecting precious natural environments and heritage everywhere.”
