Fine Music Magazine September 2024 and AI
Composer features, a volunteer spotlight, a music quiz… and AI!
The September edition of 2MBS Fine Music Magazine ventures into controversial territory this month
with an AI-assisted feature by editor David Ogilvie on film music composer Maurice Jarre.
It’s the first in a series looking into the issues that artificial intelligence raises for music and music broadcasting.
Michael Morton-Evans pens a fascinating piece on Gustav Holst (“The Weekend Composer Who Shot to Fame”);

Derek Parker profiles the work of ‘musical disrupter’ Arnold Schoenberg; and Barry O’Sullivan talks with Sydney jazz doyen and saxophonist, Steve Fitzmaurice.
Mary Lenart with the Governor of NSW, Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC
There’s also a charming spotlight interview with long-time volunteer Mary Lenart and the return of our popular quiz, this month with a theme of music featuring animals, birds and insects!
Editor David Ogilvie says Artificial Intelligence (AI) threatens to revolutionise the way society functions and way music and music broadcasters operate.
“It’s no exaggeration to say its development is on a par with the adoption of the internet itself… we ignore it at our peril.”
In a series of articles over the next few months, Fine Music Magazine will explain what GAI is, how it works in relation to writing about music,its benefits and risks as well as ethical issues including, copyright and plagiarism.
This month’s article was edited from ChatGPT-generated text. Next month’s edition will compare the original with this version.
And 2MBS has invited feedback (“whether you are excited, enthused or enraged by this development”) from its readers!
There’s much more in the offing at 2MBS Fine Music this month and beyond.
