The first-ever fully digital Ring Cycle opens in Brisbane this week – and the world is watching
The biggest theatrical production currently in Australia will open at Brisbane’s Queensland Performing Arts Centre this Friday night 1st December.
The Ring Cycle is recognised as the most challenging work in the operatic repertoire, and now this famous tale of dragons and gods and mystical forces has had a “Lord of the Rings “style makeover.
Never before has Wagner’s work been reinterpreted using the cutting-edge technologies that have created this new production by visionary Chinese/American director Chen Shi-Zheng.
From AI auto-generated graphics on giant LED screens to smart lighting, 3D printed set pieces, UV infused costumes, and mind-bending projections, this world premiere is a Ring Cycle like never before.
The Ring is always keenly anticipated around the world for the sheer scale, level of expertise and creativity that is required to stage the series of four operas over the space of a week. Individually the four operas are recognised as pinnacles of the art form, but combined they create one of greatest artistic masterpieces of all time.
For this Brisbane season Opera Australia has collaborated with Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Opera Queensland and Dancenorth to bring this production to life.
More than 350 people are involved in staging the work, including artists, singers, musicians, dancers, costume and graphic designers, choreographers, lighting designers, stage managers and make-up artists, all coming together in Brisbane from Australia and around the world.
