Haskoning Leads Critical Flood Mitigation and Drainage Design for City of Parramatta’s Wentworth Point Resilience Project

City of Parramatta’s Hill Road project, targets four known flood points along Hill Road, Wentworth Point. It’s part of a $58.5 million joint government initiative to reduce flood risk, safeguard 18,000+ residents from flood isolation, and minimise disruption to the community.

Sydney, Australia: Consulting engineering company Haskoning has secured a contract with City of Parramatta to complete flood mitigation studies and drainage design works on Hill Road and the Wentworth Point surrounding area. This project forms part of a major increase in climate resilience as a focus for Haskoning in Australia.

This project is part of the $58.5 million Hill Road flood resilience project and safety improvement project funded by the Australian and NSW Governments in association with City of Parramatta Council.

Hill Road is the main public access point by private vehicle into Wentworth Point and regularly experiences inundation due to local stormwater run-off and outlets being blocked by elevated water levels in Haslams Creek and the Parramatta River. This results in the isolation of around 18,000 residents, with this figure projected to double by the time the suburb is fully developed.

Haskoning has been engaged across four core areas: an initial flood study to assess current risk, a flood risk management plan for the wider Haslams Creek catchment, an evaluation of infrastructure upgrades required to reduce flooding, and finally, civil, urban and drainage design improvements for the area that will complement works associated with the NSW Government’s planned Stage 2 Parramatta Light Rail project.

“Our role in the project is to identify how to mitigate flooding in the area and improve the overall accessibility for residents. We will also create management plans to protect the safety of the people affected in any residual flooding and ensure the integrity of any future development in the area,” said Andrew Morris, Associate Director Resilience and Project Lead at Haskoning.

Haskoning has worked on several projects with state and federal governments including the billion dollar Middle Arm Sustainable Development Precinct in The Northern Territory, an $80 million infrastructure revitalisation project in the Torres Strait Islands, funded by both the Australian and Queensland government, as well as a multi-million-dollar coastline protection project in partnership with the Republic of the Marshall Islands funded by the World Bank and Green Climate Fund.

“Haskoning’s team has worked closely with governments across multiple levels both in Australia and abroad, with a proven track record of successfully delivering complex and comprehensive projects from feasibility to completion. We welcome the opportunity for our Australian team to play an integral role in improving and safeguarding the Wentworth Point community as well as delivering long term sustainable solutions for the City of Parramatta,” said Morris.

The project works span approximately a 10 hectare area, and is part of the state government’s master plan to transform the Wentworth Point peninsula into a well-designed mixed-use neighbourhood.

Haskoning’s work will need to be developed in the context of a number of constraints, including sensitivity to environmental receivers, contamination mitigation and maintained traffic operations throughout delivery to ensure no disruption to residents.

The majority of the work within Haskoning’s remit is expected to be completed by mid-2026.
