Sydney is bidding to become a World Major Marathon.
“CS Sydney Marathon is striving to become a marathon major  and join the likes of Boston, New York and London as one of the premiere Marathons in the world. This would put Sydney in the world spotlight celebrating the city as over 40,000 runners cross our iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge and finish at the steps of the Sydney Opera House.”
The Sydney Marathon is an annual event that takes place in Sydney, Australia. The marathon is a 42.195-kilometer race that is run on a course that passes through some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks, including the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House.
John Graham, Minister for Jobs and Tourism, spoke at the Sydney Opera House to launch the 2024 Sydney Marathon and its bid to become a World Major Marathon. He appeared alongside Race Director Wayne Larden, CEO Abbott World Marathon Majors Dawna Stone, Elite Athletes, Elite Wheelchair Athletes and Acting Coordinator-General Craig Moran from Transport for NSW.
Sydney has  not yet qualified to become a World Marathon Major host city in 2025. Assessors from around the world were in Sydney to evaluate the delivery of the marathon and its overall participant experience before deciding whether to bestow Sydney Marathon with Abbott World Marathon Major status in 2025. The results of that evaluation are not available.
