National Diabetes Week 2025
Media release/Saturday 12 July,2025
This National Diabetes Week, we are highlighting the importance of prevention, because it matters at every stage of the journey. Whether it’s preventing type 2 diabetes or preventing complications for people living with type 1, type 2 or gestational diabetes, awareness and action make a difference. |
|
Why does prevention matter? |
Diabetes is now the fastest-growing chronic condition in Australia, and all types of diabetes bring serious health challenges. Currently, 1.5 million Australians are living with some form of diabetes, reflecting a staggering 220% increase since 2000. These statistics highlight a serious health crisis that urgently requires our attention, especially during this week dedicated to advocating for better health outcomes.
As someone living with diabetes, you understand the impacts all too well, which is why we are focusing on prevention. Although genetics and cultural background play a role in developing type 2 diabetes, research has shown that up to 58% of type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented through proactive measures and lifestyle changes if detected early enough.
At Diabetes Australia, we believe it is our responsibility to share this information clearly and respectfully during National Diabetes Week. This year, we are helping Australians at risk of type 2 diabetes understand the early warning signs, know their risk factors, and take action. A free, simple health check at more than 300 Priceline Pharmacies nationwide could be a powerful first step. We are not here to alarm. We are here to inform and empower.
Early action can help prevent serious complications later. Even if a fraction of Australians at risk can avoid a preventable condition, the positive impact for individuals, families and the healthcare system will be significant. |

Empowering yourself to prevent complications |
People living with all types of diabetes know the daily challenges and long-term risks – they face them with strength and resilience every day.
Every person’s experience with diabetes is unique, which is why maintaining relationships with healthcare providers and support networks is essential for living well with diabetes.
