What we found in our misinformation survey

Newsletter/Media release from Cassie, Australians for a Murdoch Royal Commission

There are already grave concerns about the impact of human biases on AI systems. But now, Murdoch-owned News Corp has signed a lucrative content deal with ChatGPT maker OpenAI.

The upshot is that Murdoch’s biased coverage of events will have even more influence on public discourse, as information systems are literally trained on Murdoch news.

A few weeks ago, we sent out a quiz to see how well you can spot misinformation and AI-generated fakes.

For now, most of us are still able to spot AI generated images – although 48% of us were tricked by at least one AI image. Just over 47% missed at least one of the AI generated headlines.

Encouragingly, over 62% of respondents support imposing penalties on both media organisations and tech platforms that spread disinformation – and the research clearly shows that this is necessary.

According to a study by MIT in 2018, false news stories are 70% more likely to be shared on Twitter (now known as X) than factually accurate stories.

If you haven’t already, please share the quiz with your colleagues, friends, and family so we can continue to talk about misinformation on social media and in the news.

Warmly,

Cassie, Australians for a Murdoch Royal Commission
