NBA:

The opening week of the NBA has arrived and the Boston Celtics quest to defend their title from last season has begun in emphatic fashion, after an end-to-end demolition of the New York Knicks 132-109.The biggest name in the basketball world, Lebron James, has again broken history
but this time in a heartwarming way, taking the court with son Bronny James to become the first ever father son duo in American basketball. That wasn’t the only highlight as the Lakers won their first opening night game since 2016 over aformidable Minnesota Timberwolves side 110-103. Anthony Davis led the charge with 36 points and 16 rebounds while Lebron had 16 points. Bronny James did not score in just over two minutes on the floor.

Australian Dyson Daniels played a pivotal role in his side’s victory over Ben Simmons and the Brooklyn Nets 120-116. Daniels scored 15 points while stuffing the stat sheet with five rebounds and two assists. Ben Simmons accumulated six points, five rebounds and eight assists as he fights for a healthy season. Simmons has only played 58 out of a possible 200 games since departing Philadelphia in early 2022 after constant back issues.

NBL:

The Sydney Kings are bracing for a potential top spot takeover with a win over the undermanned Perth Wildcats this weekend, whose star point guard Bryce Cotton is out of the game with a rib injury. The Kings are sitting comfortably in second position with five wins and two losses and showed off their exuberance with a dominant second half to beat the reigning champions last week 80-71. The South East Melbourne Phoenix tallied their second win of the season over the New Zealand Breakers 88-62, connecting on 46.4 percent of their three point attempts.

HORSE RACING :

Spring carnival fans are gearing up for a massive weekend with the highly touted Cox Plate at Moonee Valley on Saturday. The horse Prognosis, with Damian Lane in the saddle has come in as an early favourite but is closely followed by Via Sistina, Pride of Jenni and Broadsiding, who has already pocketed the Golden Rose at Rosehill this Spring. Mr Brightside can never be left out of the race with Craig Williams at the helm. Situated as the fifth favourite, the horse has produced at least a place in each of its past five races. The forecast has given Melburnians extra motivation to attend, predicting a warmer than average sun all day, with a top of 21 degrees.

CRICKET:

Zimbabwe have set uncharted records in their T20 International against Gambia, scoring an inconceivable total of 344 runs in a World Cup qualification match enroute to a 290-run destruction, bowling out their opponents for 54. Sikandar Raza scored 133 not out off 43 balls, with 15 sixes and a strike rate of 326.32.

The Australian cricket team will begin their summer campaign in less than two weeks’ time, with three One Day International matches against Pakistan. Selectors are still weighing up a replacement for David Warner, who will not appear in Australia’s test side for the first time since 2010 barring the notorious suspension.

AMERICAN FOOTBALL:

The Kansas City Chiefs have bolstered their receiving core after acquiring Deandre Hopkins from the Tennessee Titans in a trade. Hopkins is a three time all-pro from 2017-2019 and a five-time pro bowler. The Chiefs are the only undefeated team remaining in the league as they look to become the first ever team to three-peat in the NFL (Green Bay Packers did it twice before the league change).
They will match up against the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday morning.
