Today, as we celebrate International Chardonnay Day 22nd of May 2025 , there’s no better time to reflect on the magic of this noble grape.
While many regions worldwide produce exceptional Chardonnay, from the crisp, mineral-driven expressions of Chablis to the rich, buttery wines of California, some truly stand out. Among the pantheon of top Chardonnays globally, one Australian gem consistently shines: Giaconda.
What defines a great Chardonnay? It’s often a delicate balance of vibrant fruit (think citrus, green apple, or stone fruit), subtle oak integration (offering notes of toast, vanilla, or spice), and a remarkable minerality that speaks of its terroir.
“Indeed, the greatest Chardonnays, such as those masterfully crafted in Burgundy, transcend mere definable fruit flavors, developing complex secondary flavors of nuts, brioche, mushroom, or even a subtle flintiness that adds incredible depth and intrigue. A great Chardonnay should possess complexity, a creamy texture, and a lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression.”

On this International Chardonnay Day, I also want to take a moment to acknowledge that Rick Kinzbrunner had on me back in 2021 when I discovered the Best Chardonnay in Australia that left me with such lasting impressions. His unwavering vision and relentless pursuit of excellence have not only put Victoria’s Beechworth on the global wine map but have also consistently produced Chardonnays that stand among the world’s finest.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Beechworth, Victoria, Giaconda has achieved almost mythical status among wine connoisseurs. To say a visit there is a privilege is an understatement, and back in 2021 ,.. I had the extraordinary opportunity to step onto the hallowed ground where some of the world’s most revered Chardonnay is crafted. This visit, coming immediately post-COVID lockdown, felt like a true liberation. The journey itself, particularly the exhilarating drive across the stunning Snowy Mountains, was an adventure that added an extra layer of excitement to the anticipation of reaching this renowned destination.
The drive to Giaconda itself is a promise of something special. Winding country roads lead you deeper into a landscape that feels both ancient and vibrant, hinting at the unique terroir that contributes to the wines’ character. Upon arrival, the winery presents itself not with grandiosity, but with a solid confidence – a testament to the fact that its reputation is built solely on the exceptional liquid within its bottles.
Beechworth: A Historic Gem in Wine Country
Adding to the allure of this wine region is the town of Beechworth itself. A remarkably preserved historic gold-mining town, Beechworth captivates visitors with its elegant Victorian architecture, tree-lined streets, and a tangible sense of a bygone era. Beyond the world-class wines, the town offers a charming backdrop with its artisanal food producers, quaint shops, and a rich history that invites exploration. It’s the kind of place where a leisurely stroll reveals hidden treasures, perfectly complementing the sophisticated experience of the local wineries.
My visit offered a fascinating glimpse into the philosophy of Giaconda.
There’s an undeniable commitment to tradition, yet it’s interwoven with a meticulous understanding of modern viticulture and winemaking. The vineyards themselves are a study in precision, reflecting the careful hand of founder Rick Kinzbrunner, the visionary winemaker behind Giaconda. His dedication to crafting exceptional wines extends beyond Chardonnay; he is also celebrated for producing outstanding red wines, including a great Shiraz and, notably, his Nebbiolo, which is uniquely vinified in amphoras – a technique that further highlights his innovative approach and commitment to expressing the purest characteristics of the grape. One can almost feel the dedication in the air, a silent vow to coax the very best from the ancient soils and the precious vines.

The Gravity of Quality: A Cellar Carved from Granite
One of the most remarkable aspects of Giaconda’s winemaking prowess lies beneath the surface – literally. The winery boasts an incredible wine cellar built directly into a granite rock cave. This natural insulation provides the perfect environment for maturation, maintaining a consistent temperature and humidity crucial for the wine’s development.
What’s even more fascinating is their commitment to a gravity-fed winemaking method. This gentle approach begins with the pressing of the grapes at the top of the facility. From there, gravity takes over, allowing the juice and later the wine to flow naturally downwards into the cavernous cellar for fermentation and aging.5 This eliminates the need for harsh pumping, which can stress the wine and potentially impact its delicate flavors. It’s a testament to their belief that the less intervention, the better the final product.
The Liquid Gold: Giaconda Chardonnay
And then, of course, there’s the wine. Giaconda Chardonnay is not just a drink; it’s an experience.
It’s a wine that speaks of its origins and terroir , …of the cool Beechworth climate, and of the unique mineral complexity of the site.
“On the palate, it’s a symphony of nuanced flavors – often described as having notes of citrus, stone fruit, and a captivating minerality, all underpinned by a precise acidity and a remarkable length. It’s a wine that demands attention, revealing new layers with each sip, evolving gracefully in the glass and promising even more with age,..of course one can’t help comparing it to the greatest chardonnay wines of Burgundy “
What truly sets Giaconda apart, and what became even clearer during my visit, is the relentless pursuit of perfection. This isn’t a winery chasing trends or volume; it’s a dedicated atelier focused on crafting wines of unparalleled quality and distinctiveness. The limited production only adds to its allure, making each bottle a rare and sought-after treasure.
My time at Giaconda was more than just a winery tour; it was an education. It was a chance to witness firsthand the passion, precision, and profound respect for the land that goes into creating a wine that consistently ranks among the world’s best. Leaving Beechworth, the memory of that exquisite Chardonnay lingered, a reminder that some of the greatest pleasures in life are born from dedication, artistry, and a deep connection to the earth. For any serious wine enthusiast, a pilgrimage to Giaconda is not just recommended, it’s essential.
