SOUTHEAST ABORIGINAL ARTS MARKET RETURNS TO CARRIAGEWORKS WITH FREE LIVE PROGRAM
A celebration of the rich cultural inheritance and contemporary artistic expression of Aboriginal artists of Australia’s south-east region
Sydney, Australia: Carriageworks, one of Australia’s most significant creative industry hubs and located on Gadigal Country, is proud to present the return of the SOUTHEAST Aboriginal Arts Market, a celebration of the creative diversity of south-east Australian Aboriginal art curated by leading Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi artist Jonathan Jones, from 23-24 November.
32 independent Aboriginal artists and collectives will come together to offer thousands of artworks for sale, spanning traditional and contemporary practices across ceramics, jewellery, weaving, carving, textiles, photography, painting and prints, with 100% of proceeds going directly to the artists. Now in its seventh edition, SOUTHEAST is a place to explore and invest in artworks by Aboriginal artists from regional and coastal NSW, ACT, Victoria, the Murray–Darling basin catchment and Tasmania, and offers a unique opportunity for visitors to meet with the artists and learn about Aboriginal cultures from this region.
Alongside the market, SOUTHEAST will present a free public program of live workshops and talks about the cultural practices from the south-east. Visitors are invited to learn from Wiradjuri weaver Jessika Spencer about traditional and modern techniques and fibres as they create their own bangle, sit down with Uncle Tom Carney, a Ngiyampaa Wayilwan man, to hear about working as a shearer and stockman while learning how to plait with leather, and yarn with Barkindji artist and plant knowledge holder David Doyle during a hands-on demonstration about plants and their uses.
Curator Jonathan Jones said: “SOUTHEAST gives visitors an opportunity to engage directly with local artists, have a yarn and purchase artworks, and provides a vital platform for artists to engage with new audiences. In a region that doesn’t enjoy the benefits of an art centre-based industry, SOUTHEAST provides one of the very few forums for south-east artists to showcase their extraordinary work as a cultural collective. It’s fantastic to see the return of SOUTHEAST to Carriageworks this November, it has a significant impact for our artists and region.”

12.15pm / 12.50pm / 1.30pm – Weaving with fibre workshop with Jessika Spencer
Learn from Wiradjuri weaver Jessika Spencer about traditional and modern techniques and fibres while crafting your own bangle. Sessions are 25 minutes.
10.15am / 11.15am – Leather workshop with Uncle Tom Carney
Sit down with Ngiyampaa Wayilwan man Uncle Tom Carney as he yarns about working as a shearer and stockman while he shares with you how to plait with leather. Sessions are 40 minutes.
12.00pm – Bush medicine and edible plants demonstration with David Doyle
Yarn with Barkindji artist and plant knowledge holder David Doyle during a hands-on demonstration about plants and their uses.
