THE TEAM FROM SHELL HOUSE ANNOUNCE THE INTERNATIONAL AT MARTIN PLACE

The Point* Group, responsible for some of Sydney’s favourite establishments including Shell House, is set to open a new, multi-dimensional destination in Sydney’s CBD. Elevated above Sydney’s social and civic heart at Martin Place, The International will open in November 2024.

Rising up between Harry Seidler’s ‘Modernist Mushroom’ and the renowned Harry Seidler designed tower within the heritage listed MLC Centre, The International will draw energy from the precinct’s mid-century modern design to present three distinctly international levels of hospitality that reflect Sydney’s progressive drinking and dining culture; The Wine Bar, The Grill and The Panorama Bar.

Brett Robinson, owner and restaurateur behind the The Point* Group, said: “We’re excited for The International to become the cultural cornerstone of this lively and engaged part of the city and we look forward to making our contribution to Martin Place. Our approach will be simple: if it’s fun, delicious and exciting, it’s on the menu. Our team has had the opportunity to pull together this new project with total creative freedom and without limitations to define a new standard of big city dining. The International is not just a restaurant; it will be a social and culinary destination where the only rule is that the food, the wine and the hand-crafted beverages must be delicious and of exceptional quality and the service dedicated, inspired and authentic.”

The Grill

The Grill at The International will celebrate global standard fine dining with a simple and unwavering commitment to the finest ingredients cooked over fire and delivered with warm, generous and skilled service. Here, custom mid-century inspired furniture and layers of rich, deep, gloss varnished joinery combine to create a first class atmosphere and exceptional comfort.

Helmed  by culinary director Joel Bickford, The Grill will focus on provenance, best in class produce, seasonality and simplicity. Guests will enter the space via a luxurious, glossy walnut bar designed to seat only four and set to deliver the iciest of martinis and perfectly chilled champagne. From there, soaring polished steel provides an entryway into the dining room, featuring a selection of white, red and chocolate marble flooring arranged in striking geometric patterns. A cold bar stacked with local seafood of the day on ice will sit alongside a long open kitchen with banks of both wood-fired and charcoal grills.

Group culinary director Joel Bickford said: “The Grill is going to be the ultimate place to celebrate those really special life moments – however we also want it to be a go-to for those seeking to enjoy the everyday pleasure of exceptional food and wine in a luxurious indoor outdoor dining room. Ultimately, it’s about the food; provenance, best in class produce, seasonality and simplicity with absolutely no cutting corners, delivered by the very best chefs in the city working to deliver a unique perspective on classic traditions, internationally renowned preparations and worldly perspectives. Opening in summer, expect technicolour seasonality and obsessional provenance aimed to set a new standard in big city dining in Sydney.”

Alex Kirkwood, food and beverage director added: “Alongside Joel’s menu, we will be dedicated to the art of experienced waiters, table side speeches, a uniquely effortless and laid back style of fine dining, and a hat tip to international style luxury. Our wine lists, cocktails and world of spirits are set to impress even the most discerning diners.”

The Wine Bar

The Wine Bar at The International will be an engagingly social bar and restaurant with a truly global focus on wine trends, casual drinking and dining; challenging what a traditional wine bar should be.

Executive chef Danny Corbett’s menu will focus on small plates with inspiration from around the world. The Wine Bar will be made up of three unique spaces:

  • A 60-seat piazza style courtyard restaurant, which is the first part of the venue guests will see on arrival,  centred around Charles Perry’s yellow steel ‘S’ sculpture. The space will have its own outdoor bar to service all-day dining and post-work drinks, and will be the perfect spot for people watching and catch ups with friends.

  • An intimate, 40-seat wine bar will sit as a centrepiece, featuring banks of wine fridges, a terrace overlooking bustling Martin Place, an extensive by-the-glass wine list by Alex Kirkwood and an open kitchen anchored by an imported Marana Forni pizza oven.

  • A 60-seat circular dining room appointed with plush carpets, banquettes and mid-century timber joinery will be the ideal spot for occasions that warrant a deeper dive into The Wine Bar’s extensive wine list, a fun celebratory meal or one of the many wine parties the room is set to host.

The Panorama Bar

High above Martin Place, situated on the top floor of The International, The Panorama Bar seeks to show off Sydney at its best with views of the sparkling city skyline. Overlooking the zig-zagging of modern and heritage buildings and the towering modernist MLC Building, The Panorama Bar will provide a distinct perspective of the city, setting the scene for a quintessential Sydney experience. A vibrant, social destination centred around high end ‘sip and snack’ culture, guests will love this space for sun-soaked lunches, golden hour drinks and nighttime fun.

The Panorama Bar will offer all day dining and late night drinking (and maybe even dancing). Here, culinary director Joel Bickford and executive chef Danny Corbett will play with small plates and light snacks; the cold bar and hot bank of Hibachi grills will provide the basis of the menu which covers snacks of all types (whether on a stick, in a bun, on toast, or on ice). A seasonal drinks list from group beverage director and awarded bartender Josh Reynolds will include an impressive selection of cocktails accompanied by a Champagne and Chablis list to ensure first class hydration through summer.

This approachable rooftop bar will be both deeply glamorous and charmingly informal. Consisting of garden terraces that follow Seidler’s famous curvature, there are discoveries around every corner with intimate areas for groups, atmospheric fire pits with comfortable lounges and plenty of space to enjoy the program of Sydney’s best DJs.

The International will open at Martin Place in November 2024.
