-Top Wines in Australia Under $20: A Detailed Guide for Value Seekers
Review by Axel Ritenis, Wine Journalist/Publisher of The Sydney Times
Introduction
With the rising cost of living, many Australians are seeking delicious and affordable wines for everyday enjoyment. This guide, based on my 30 years of experience in the global wine trade, features 20 excellent options all under $20. Whether you’re a seasoned wine drinker or just starting to explore, you’ll find something to tempt your palate without breaking the bank.
Australian Wine Drinkers Seek Value
Wine drinkers in Australia are becoming more budget-conscious, opting for affordable options at retailers like Dan Murphy’s, BWS, Coles Liquorland, Aldi, and pub bottle shops. Rising cost of living pressures are forcing consumers to find ways to save money without sacrificing quality.
Our Wine Editor to the Rescue!
Our experienced wine editor, Axel, has over 30 years in the industry and has compiled a list of excellent wines under $20. Notably, some of these selections, like Penfolds Koonunga Hill and Wynns Shiraz from Treasury Estates, have maintained their prices for nearly a decade. I remember selling these for similar prices 30 years ago at my old Sydney Wine & Liquor store Chippendale Cellars,. when they were around $12-$15. This price stability reflects a unique situation in the Australian wine industry.
Wine Prices and Industry Challenges
While inflation has risen, wine prices haven’t followed suit. This is likely due to an oversupply of wine in the market, making price increases difficult for producers.
Retailers See the Shift
Major retailers like Coles have observed a customer shift towards cheaper products, including wine, due to “cost of living crisis” dwindling savings and cost of living pressures. Endeavour Group, owner of Dan Murphy’s and BWS, reported a change in their recent sales performance, indicating a consumer preference for value-oriented wines.
The Search for Hidden Gems
Statistics confirm a decline in food and wine sales, showing a consumer trend towards downgrading purchases. Anecdotal evidence from retailers suggests a decrease in spending on alcohol, with customers opting for more affordable options. This trend reflects a general weakening in retail demand and a shift towards budget-friendly wines.”As a wine editor with 30 years of experience, I’ve developed a keen eye for value. Given the current economic climate, I understand the importance of finding quality wines at affordable prices. This list is a curated selection of wines I’ve consistently found to deliver exceptional value. They might not have the fanciest labels, but they offer delicious flavors without breaking the bank. Let’s explore these hidden gems!”
Helping Consumers Save
With household discretionary income dropping, many are tightening their belts and seeking ways to reduce spending on non-essentials like wine. We aim to assist our readers and consumers by identifying quality wines at accessible price points. This allows them to save money without compromising on their enjoyment of wine.
Understanding the Market
Economic pressures are leading consumers to prioritize value-oriented wines. The cost of living crisis is continuing unabatted. This curated list focuses on readily available options at major retailers like Dan Murphy’s, Liquorland, and ALDI. You’ll also find these selections at many independent liquor stores, although expect slightly higher prices there.

Focus on Daily Wines
This list highlights my go-to picks for everyday drinking. These wines prove that quality doesn’t have to come with a hefty price tag. Many offer complex and satisfying flavors perfect for enjoying with a meal or on their own.
Weekend Splurges
Of course, there’s always a place for treating yourself. Special occasions or weekend gatherings might call for a more premium bottle. When those moments arise, head to Dan Murphy’s, your local wine merchant, or explore the offerings at independent stores.
Now, let’s dive into the good stuff!
Here’s a curated list of budget-friendly wines that deliver exceptional value.
Incidentally,..This list of wines includes wines that are redolent of their region and how their provenance and typicite...I mean they represent their Terroir ,..whilst none of these wines is really in the super Premium class (with the exception of the Blackstone Range from ALDI) most of them are very respectable as aperitifs or food wines for consuming alone or sharing with friends.
You wouldn’t be embarrassed to serve them,,to your mates or family.
There are several wines in our TOP 20 VALUE FOR MONEY LIST that outperform their modest price and several of them actually belong to premium wine category starting at $40 bucks namely the Blackstone Paddock twins of Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Barossa Valley Shiraz and Blacktone Paddock Margaret River Chardonnay only $19.00 that has” knocked off premium chardies in the 50 or 60 dollar category in Australian Show competitions” where the judges taste the wines blind in large groups and there is no chance of cheating or favouretism
Of course, there are many “label drinkers” out there who agonize and fuss about the prestige of a well-designed label or some imagined status or kudos for picking a particular trendy label,..,..well that’s ok too,.. but here the wines are judged on delivering tangible and consistent quality for a moderate price.

Axel’s Tasting notes
“I would describe this wine as modern and seamless red using Australia traditional and globally unique combination of the twin varieties of Shiraz with Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet gives the wine structure, length and focus,.. whilst the Shiraz fills out the mid palette with opulent spicy peppery fruit. In this case the wine is not over the top in terms of a big heavy structure ,..(as Traditional Reds once were),…BUT rather has very silky smooth tannin and really belongs to the Fine Wine category…because of its elegant structure and finesse,…I reckon this wine would out lcass a lot of expensive wines in a blind tasting”
*Top Tip -In this writers humble opinion this wine fits into the $40.00 to 50.00 Premium Red category, if it was at Dan Murphy…so it really does represent exceptional value!
Enjoy with Lamb chops or Lamb rump or a good Porterhouse steak done on the Weber BBQ or Josper Grill BBQ if you have one.

“With an intriguing mix of cassis, (blackcurrant) anise and perhaps even lifted violet aromas (think of Margaux in Bordeaux) that definitely has flavour and complexity reminiscent of a fine Bordeaux red wine, with a complexity of flavour(hints of graphite and pencil shavings) and persistence on the palate that one would normally associate with a $50 red!!!.. and I wouldn’t be the first wine critic or aficionado to make these observations,..Editor
