Investigation underway following suspicious fire at Eastern Suburbs childcare centre

Senior police  joined the Premier of New South Wales, Chris Minns, to address the media following a suspicious fire and anti-Semitic graffiti at an Eastern Suburbs childcare centre.

Just before 1am (Tuesday 20 January 2025), emergency services were called to a childcare centre on Storey Street, Maroubra, after reports of a fire.

Fire and Rescue NSW attended and found the ground floor well alight. The blaze was extinguished; however, the building sustained extensive damage.

Offensive graffiti was also located spray painted on an external wall.

The building was unoccupied at the time and there were no reports of injuries.

Officers attached to Eastern Beaches Police Area Command established a crime scene and an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Police will also advised  about the arrest and charging of a woman yesterday as investigations continue into the alleged malicious damage of vehicles and buildings at Woollahra in December.

The NSW Police Force takes hate crimes seriously and encourages anyone who is the victim of a hate crime of witnesses a hate crime to report the matter to police through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or through Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
