New CBD metro station to acknowledge Gadigal people

The NSW Government has announced Gadigal Railway Station as the name for the future metro station deep below Pitt, Park and Bathurst streets at the southern end of the Sydney CBD.
The station name acknowledges the Gadigal people, the original custodians of the land around Sydney’s CBD.
Transport for NSW engaged with key Aboriginal stakeholders and communities, including the Metropolitan Local Aboriginal Land Council, and received overwhelming support for Gadigal as the new station name.
Sydney Metro’s new station at Pitt Street in the heart of Sydney’s CBD is to be officially named Gadigal Station in recognition of the original First Nations people who inhabited the land.The new metro station at Pitt Street has been built on the multi-billion-dollar Sydney Metro City & Southwest line which is on track to open in 2024.Gadigal Station is the first public transport station in Sydney to be named after its traditional owners.The station, which is near Town Hall, is an underground station about 17 metres below ground level (north end) to 20 metres (south end), and is strategically located at the junction of Sydney’s southern CBD and the Midtown retail precinct, close to mixed employment, residential, entertainment, cultural and events-based activities within the southern Sydney CBD and Chinatown.The land of the Gadigal people stretched along the southern side of Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour) from South Head to around what is now known as Petersham.
New metro stations at Crows Nest, Victoria Cross in North Sydney, Barangaroo, Martin Place, Gadigal at the southern end of the Sydney CBD, Waterloo, as well as new platforms at Central and upgraded platforms at Sydenham will open in 2024.

When services start through the city, commuters will have access to fast and reliable metro trains from Gadigal to Crows Nest in 9 minutes, to Chatswood in 13 minutes and to Sydenham in 9 minutes.
