NSW OPPOSITION REITERATES CALLS FOR EXTENSIVE WANDING POWERS
The NSW Opposition will support reforms to reduce knife crime and improve community safety.
Leader of the Opposition Mark Speakman said the NSW Opposition has been calling for extensive wanding powers to be introduced in NSW.
“We welcome the first step taken by the NSW Labor Government today, however we are disappointed that the proposed laws don’t go further,” Mr Speakman said.
“We are dealing with serious knife crime in NSW and we want to see strong deterrents to get knives off our streets and to save lives. The NSW Opposition will seek to have these new laws reviewed in the future to determine if they are sufficient and strong enough to keep our streets safe.
Shadow Minister for Police Paul Toole reiterated calls from the NSW Opposition for wanding powers to be used by police anywhere at any time.
“If the NSW Labor Government is serious about addressing knife crime they should give our police the full powers they need to keep the community safe,” Mr Toole said.
“We should not have to wait for a violent crime to occur before an Assistant Commissioner makes a decision to declare an area an “authority” where a knife crime has occurred in the past six months.”
“We want to see a response here in NSW that goes further than ’Jack’s law’; we shouldn’t be copying the homework of other states. We need solutions that keep the people of our state safe.”
“The NSW Opposition is happy to work with the Labor Government to pass this legislation urgently, it’s what’s required to keep our communities safe.”
