Royal Life Saving Celebrates 130 Years in New Exhibition at NSW Parliament
The history and impact of Royal Life Saving NSW will be honoured at NSW Parliament House during April, in Waterway of Life – 130 Summers of Royal Life Saving.Displayed on the northern wall of the Parliament’s Fountain Court, the free exhibition traces the charitable organisation’s evolution and the enduring importance of its work.
Established in NSW in 1894, Royal Life Saving has helped millions of Australians stay safe around the water. From backyard pools and country rivers to lakes, dams, and local waterholes, the organisation has taught generations to swim, rescue, and respond.
Through educational displays and data, photographs and other memorabilia, Waterway of Life showcases key milestones, people and places from this history.
“Whether you earned your Bronze Medallion at school, learned CPR, or have witnessed our trained lifesavers in action, Royal Life Saving has touched the lives of countless Australians since its inception,” said CEO of Royal Life Saving NSW, Michael Ilinsky.
“As the premier organisation for drowning prevention and water safety in Australia, our vision is to ensure we all have the skills and knowledge to safely enjoy the water. While NSW continues to suffer alarming rates of drowning, there is still much to do.”
Roy Butler MP, Member for Barwon, who is hosting the exhibition at NSW Parliament, said,
“Swimming is part of our Australian identity, and the impact of Royal Life Saving’s work around water safety education cannot be overstated.
“This exhibition presents an opportunity for the people of NSW to celebrate the achievements and legacy of this extraordinary organisation, which remains every bit as important today.”
See Waterway of Life – 130 Summers of Royal Life Saving on weekdays, between 9am and 5pm at NSW Parliament House (6 Macquarie Street, Sydney) until 23 April 2025.
