ARTISTS LIGHT THE CITY

Creative Producer Jacqui North is creating light artworks for the centre of our beautiful city.

Offering spontaneous connections and transformation of city spaces.

SHINE is her fourth light artwork for Warane/Sydney and my first in partnership with

Merivale.

“I urge inclusivity for Sydney’s Mardi Gras and everyone to get out and enjoy

fabulous city nightlife covid-safely and outdoors.Experience the joyful and massive rainbow waterfall with

17-meters of cascading light. Play in immersive outdoor 3D projections.

Take photos with fabulous LGBTIQ+ icons projected onto you and your friends.”

LOVE THAT DARES is the fifth light artwork, bringing together homoerotic love, satire

and tragedy for Sydney Living Museum & After Dark on Thursday 24 February with

Stereogamous (Jonny Seymour and Paul Mac), Jamaica Moana, Brendan Maclean, AnSo

and Sarah Moany, Kavi, FBi DJ Isa and Queer icon DJ Sveta leads a sonic journey using the

latest geolocating technology.

North’s first series of light artworks & Curated Stories in Light & with LGBTQI+ and First Nations

storytellers was installed across the city across three sites, linking Sydney Hospital, to

laneways, to The Rocks.

Available to over 4,000 site visitors in May 2021 just before the

city’s longest lockdown it was tagged the queer Vivid.

-North is on the 24-Hour Working Group and approached Sydney Times after reading CBD

Revitalisation requires immediate action.

-North urges support for the proposal for artists to light up the CBD for authentic shared

experience and diversity after dark. The extension for year round light activations building on

the succession of Vivid. And importantly the provision of plug-and-play light projection

infrastructure and public spaces as affordable canvases. Strategies identified in The Future

of Sydney report by the Committee for Sydney.

Extract Future of Sydney

Celebrate a rich heritage and an inclusive future, Recognise distinct precincts with diverse

uses and character, Fuel innovation with creative energy, all day every day

Sydney’s CBD is already famous for its beautiful landscapes but it can be a place of shared

experiences, authenticity and diversity. It can be even more inclusive, creative, fair, and

innovative — a place for everyone.(page 42)

Let artists light up the CBD, 365 days a year to create a safe and activated CBD

Build on the great work of Vivid by establishing an ongoing program of lighting activations in

the CBD with the intention to continue creating a connected and safe environment for

everyone to enjoy. Consider impacts of light on biodiversity corridors and use safety data

and pedestrian routes to inform the design and outcomes. Create a network of partner

organizations and asset owners who would provide their assets as a canvas for artists to

create affordably. Provide accessible, zero-emission plug-and-play infrastructure both in

private and public domains including in laneways, streets, parks and other spaces that

support a network of installations throughout the CBD

Anticipated delivery DPIE,Destination NSW, City of Sydney, developer partners, First

Nations partners and Creative coordination council for CBD.
