September at Carriageworks – Design, Opera and Sake Celebrations Await!
This September, as the days grow warmer, Carriageworks becomes a vibrant hub of creativity and cultural celebration. The month kicks off with Australasia’s premier art fair Sydney Contemporary, and the Carriageworks Farmers Market will celebrate the spring blossoms with the Spring Seasonal Market. Then dive into a weekend of shopping, gourmet food, fine wine, and innovative art at The Big Design Market. Carriageworks will host the world premiere of Gilgamesh, a new Australian opera from Opera Australia and Sydney Chamber Opera, and the Australian Sake Festival returns for a rich celebration of Japanese culture.

WHAT’S ON THIS MONTH
SYDNEY CONTEMPORARY
5-8 September
The largest and most diverse gathering of leading contemporary art galleries from Australia, New Zealand, Asia and around the world returns to Carriageworks this September.
Thousands of works of art by over 500 contemporary artists will take over the entire precinct, alongside performance art, installations, talks, workshops, and tours.
THE BIG DESIGN MARKET
20-22 September
Join us for The Big Design Market, boasting more than 200 designers and artists, a mouthwatering array of food and wine experiences and immersive art installations, this event is a vibrant and joyful celebration of independent design complete with shopping, eating, drinking, creating and playing – all under one roof.
Opera Australia, Sydney Chamber Opera and Carriageworks collaborate for the first time to present the world premiere of Gilgamesh, a near Australian opera based on humanity’s oldest written epic poem.
Brought to Carriageworks’ vast performance space by visionary director Kip Williams (Sydney Theatre Company’s The Picture of Dorian Gray), Gilgamesh is an epic that must be experienced.

28-29 September
A celebration of the sake, food, and culture of Japan, indulge in over 200 varieties of Japanese sake and other alcoholic beverages from across Japan, as well as culinary delights and captivating performances.
14 September
Our Spring Seasonal Market will return on Saturday 14 September, 8am-1pm. Celebrating the warming weather, the market will be bustling with fresh spring produce, brunch options and a live program that includes a cooking demonstration, panel discussion and workshops, Guided Beehive Experience and Kids Workshop: Little Ticklers Planting Workshop.
